James Rana is an award winning writer-performer. He trained as a clown and juggler, beginning his career as a street performer. His stage credits include acclaimed performances with: Ensemble Studio Theatre, Pan Asian Rep, The Royal Shakespeare Company, Worth Street Theatre, The Shakespeare Theatre, Contemporary American Theatre Festival, Classical Theatre of Harlem, Project Shaw, Actors Shakespeare Company, East Lynne Theatre, Ocean Professional Theatre, Shakespeare & Company, Luna Stage, Princeton Rep, Naked Angels, Coney Island USA, The New Group, Lark Theatre and Germany’s Bonn Biennale and Globe Neuss Shakespeare Festival.

He starred in the award-winning short A GIRL LIKE YOU WITH A BOY LIKE ME (Accolade Award). Other film and television appearances include guest-starring roles on “LAW & ORDER:SVU,” “CHICAGO FIRE,” “As The World Turns,” “One Life To Live,” THE ASSASSIN, THE WAR WITHIN, CORPORATE KARMA, SWIM LITTLE FISH SWIM, “Third Watch” and sketch characters for “Conan O’Brien.”

He wrote and narrated the radio documentaries POE: A CELEBRATION and P.T. BARNUM: MAN OF THE PEOPLE for NPR. His radio play CAFETERIA was awarded best radio play at the Moondance International Film Festival and was produced by the Shoestring Radio Theatre in San Francisco. He produced and hosted “CLASSICALLY ABSURD WITH JAMES RANA,” a four part original series, celebrating all that is funny in the world of classical music.

His stage play THE POE MYSTERIES received its world premiere at the East Lynne Theater in Cape May, NJ and was re-mounted at the Ocean Professional Theatre. His sitcom pilot “HAS BEEN” was a semi-finalist for best pilot at the LA Comedy Short Film Festival, Los Angeles Screenplay Competition and Moondance International Film Festival. His screenplay STRAYS was a top finalist at the Bridge International Screenplay Competition and Back in the Box Script Competition. His one-act play SO LONG PLUTO was produced by the Camino Real Playhouse’s International One Act Festival.

His stage adaptation of Washington Irving’s THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW received it’s world premiere at the East Lynne Theatre on July, 2013. His acclaimed adaptation of Johnston McCulley’s ZORRO for the East Lynn Theater received its world premiere July 2014 and Dicken’s A CHRISTMAS CAROL, which he also directed was produced by the Actors Shakespeare Company. His stage adaptation of HUCK FINN received its world premiere at the East Lynne Theater in July, 2015. He works frequently as a narrator and voice-actor. He is a member of Actors Equity, SAG-AFTRA, Dramatist’s Guild and The Players Club. He has also led the Coney Island U.S.A. Mermaid Parade as the stilt-walking Uncle Sam.
